Charles Kenny’s new book Getting Better: Why Global Development is Succeeding — and How We Can Improve the World Even More. Kenny, a contributing editor to FP, claims that even though the global landscape often seems torn with violence and instability, human progress has been largely successful over the last half-century.

Experts in various fields, including global development, business and journalism, discuss different areas of concern brought up by the book. Jeni Klugman, the director and lead author of the United Nations Development Program’s Human Development Report, says that while people are becoming healthier, they are not necessarily becoming freer.

Bradford Plumer, an associate editor of the New Republic, asks how people’s lives could be improving when the planet they live on is getting worse?
