As perhaps the only person who still doesn’t own a cell phone, I feel a little sheepish posting another article on the topic, but it’s an interesting read from the online journal Participatory Learning and Action. While I’m a little frustrated with much of the breathless hubris about cell phones, this has some more solid analysis and examples of real world applications. Read the article here (it’s a pdf).

The Daily Galaxy (a tech blog) is reporting some interesting work from MIT Media Lab on the near ubiquity of cellphones in much of the developing world. With their widespread availability the hope is that they can provide a platform for applications from agriculture to health diagnostics that will drive down the cost of services to the poor and open up new opportunities.
